Our Story
It started in my grandmother's clinic, back in the early 2000s, long before I understood what it meant to build a business, or what it meant to watch one fail for reasons that had nothing to do with whether it deserved to succeed.
My grandmother had spent her working life as a nurse, and an exceptional one at that. Even years after she retired, people would stop her in shops just to thank her, to tell her they still remembered how she'd treated them decades earlier. I used to ask her how it was possible that they remembered her after all those years. People remember how you make them feel, especially when they are most vulnerable.
My grandfather was a foreman in construction and a bricklayer, with no formal education to speak of but an enormous capacity for hard work, and when my grandmother saw the chance to open a small clinic from our own yard, he was the one who built it for her. They stocked it with second hand medical equipment and the necessary medication and supplies, and made the dream a reality. The nearest hospital was in town, so the community and surrounding neighbourhoods would have benefited immensely from having a clinic. Although demand from the community was there, within months, that clinic had closed.
It did not close because my grandmother wasn't good at what she did: nursing people was a calling for her. It closed because nobody in our house had the business acumen to run it, and there is only so far good intentions and hard work will carry something that was never given the structure it needed to survive.
Why We Do This
AfriBao exists because of precisely this problem. We have each seen, up close, what happens when real need, real demand, and real hard work still aren't enough on their own to keep a good idea standing, and that gap between ambition and structure is exactly where we believe the real work has to happen. We started this business in 2026 so that no founder we work with has to lose what they've built for a reason that was always fixable. Everything we do is built to close that gap, and to make sure it stays closed long after we've stepped back.
We don't believe small businesses fail because the founders behind them don't have enough ambition, or willingness to work hard for what they want. What we believe is that it is almost always a lack of structured support that brings a good idea down.
This matters to us most when we think about young people, because South Africa and other African countries simply do not have enough jobs to absorb everyone who needs one. We have also seen exactly what that does to a person, to a community, to a society over time. At the same time, the system seems to only be teaching people to become employees, job seekers, while the solution to unemployment for us as African countries is to produce capable job creators, more entrepreneurs. The truth is that a lack of business knowledge and exposure makes entrepreneurship feel like a distant, unfamiliar country rather than a real option sitting right in front of someone. Africa is one of the fastest growing economic regions on the planet, with some of the youngest and most dynamic populations anywhere in the world, and that potential is enormous.
But potential without opportunity is only ever a story waiting to be told, and we would rather help write it than wait for someone else to.
We believe, all the way down, that good businesses build stable families, that stable families build good communities, and that good communities build good nations. So we are starting exactly where it matters most to us: one business, one founder, at a time.
